Run the 20-minute self-audit

If your website looks fine to you, that is the problem.

Most Scottish business websites are quietly losing customers every single day in ways the owner cannot see, because the owner already knows what the site is supposed to do. A first-time visitor does not. They give your homepage about three seconds of patience, and most sites blow it.

This guide is the audit we run on every prospect site that comes through our door, distilled into something you can do yourself in 20 minutes. No tools required beyond a phone, a laptop, and an honest pair of eyes.

How to tell your site is leaking customers

Three questions:

How many enquiries did your site bring in last month?

How many visitors did it have?

What is the ratio?

For a service business, a healthy site converts 2-5% of visitors into enquiries. Anything under 1% means something is broken. Most sites we audit sit at 0.2-0.4% and the owner does not realise.

1. Slow Largest Contentful Paint

Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) is how long it takes for the biggest visible thing on your page to load. Google considers anything over 2.5 seconds "needs improvement" and over 4 seconds "poor". Most WordPress sites with a page builder come in at 4-8 seconds on mobile.

How to check: Open PageSpeed Insights , paste your URL, look at the mobile LCP score.

The fix: Lazy-loaded images in WebP, no blocking JavaScript in the head, no page builder bloat. A custom React build typically gets LCP under 1.5 seconds.

2. Layout shift on load (CLS)

You know when you go to tap a button and the page suddenly shifts and you tap an ad instead? That is Cumulative Layout Shift. It is infuriating, and it directly correlates with bounce rate.

How to check: Same PageSpeed Insights report. Look for CLS score under 0.1.

The fix: Reserved dimensions for every image and embed, fonts loaded with `font-display: optional`, no late-injected banners.

3. The CTA is buried or unclear

"Get in touch" is not a call to action. It is a polite suggestion. Every page on your site should have a single, obvious, specific next step.

Bad: "Contact us"

Better: "Get a free quote"

Best: "Get a free quote โ€” usually within 4 hours"

And it should appear above the fold on the homepage, in the header on every page, and at least twice on long pages.

4. Generic stock photography

The stock-photo handshake. The diverse team in a glass office that does not exist. The smiling barista who is not your barista. Visitors clock these in milliseconds and trust the site less.

Real photos of your premises, your team, your work โ€” even on an iPhone โ€” outperform expensive stock every time.

5. Contact form friction

Every extra field on a contact form drops conversion by roughly 4-7%. The most common offender: required phone number when an email would do, plus a "how did you hear about us?" dropdown.

For a first enquiry, name and email is usually enough. Get the rest in the follow-up.

6. No social proof above the fold

If a visitor has to scroll to find a testimonial, a star rating, or a logo strip, you are asking them to take you on faith. Put one piece of social proof in the hero โ€” a short quote, a Trustpilot score, "5โ˜… on Google" โ€” and watch enquiry rate jump.

7. Mobile menu hidden behind a hamburger

The hamburger icon is a UX habit, not a UX best practice. Hiding your services behind one tap costs you visibility for every other page. Where it makes sense, expose 2-3 key links directly in the mobile header (Services, Pricing, Book) and put the rest behind the menu.

8. Broken or missing analytics

If you cannot tell us how many leads your site brought in last month, the analytics are broken. The most common issues:

GA4 installed but no conversion events tracked

Form submissions not firing a "lead" event

Phone clicks not tracked

WhatsApp and email link clicks ignored

9. No clear next step on internal pages

Visitors land on your "Services" page, read it, then... what? If there is no clear CTA at the bottom of every internal page, you have given them an off-ramp.

10. Auto-playing video or carousels

Hero carousels that change every five seconds. Background videos that autoplay with sound. Both eat bandwidth, both distract from the message, and both have been measured repeatedly to reduce conversion compared with a single static hero.

11. The "we are great" homepage

Most homepage hero sections talk about the company. The visitor does not care about the company yet โ€” they care about whether you can solve their problem. Lead with the customer's outcome, not your founding story.

Bad: "We are a family-run web agency in Glasgow with over 15 years of experience"

Better: "Custom-built websites that bring you customers โ€” from ยฃ499"

Run the 20-minute self-audit

Take your phone, open your site fresh (private browsing window), and score honestly out of 11:

LCP under 2.5s on mobile?

CLS under 0.1?

One clear, specific CTA in the hero?

Real photos throughout?

Contact form has 4 fields or fewer?

Social proof visible above the fold?

Key links visible in mobile header?

Analytics tracking real conversions?

Every internal page has a CTA at the bottom?

No autoplay video or rotating carousel in the hero?

Homepage leads with customer outcome, not company history?

Under 7 out of 11 and your site is actively costing you customers. Most Scottish business sites we audit score 3-5.
